The Simple Version
Prepare the car first. Then check your mirrors, check over your right shoulder, wait for a clear gap, and move away smoothly only when it is safe.
Blind Spot Checks: Use Them At High-Risk Moments
- Moving off is high risk because someone can be hidden beside or just behind the car.
- A missed right shoulder check before moving off can be a serious test fault if another road user is affected.
- You do not need to check your blind spot for every normal left or right turn.
- You do need it for higher-risk position changes, such as moving off, changing lanes, or moving out around parked cars.
Common Mistakes
- Checking first, then taking too long to prepare the car.
- Forgetting the blind spot before moving.
- Moving because the car behind is waiting.
- Letting the clutch up too quickly.
What Examiners Care About
They want you to move away safely without making anyone slow, swerve, or react. You are not being tested on rushing away quickly. You are being tested on preparing properly, checking the right blind spot, choosing a safe gap, and moving with control.
