Blind spot checks stop you moving into a space your mirrors cannot show clearly, especially before moving off or changing position.
The Simple Version
A blind spot is an area around the car you cannot see properly in the mirrors. Before moving off, you need to look over your shoulder and check the area next to the car.
Common Mistakes
- Only checking mirrors before moving off.
- Doing a tiny glance that does not actually check the side of the car.
- Checking once, waiting too long, then moving without checking again.
- Forgetting that cyclists and motorbikes can be hidden close beside you.
What Examiners Care About
Moving away without proper blind spot checks can become serious if another road user is affected. It is one of the first safety habits examiners notice.
