Key challenges

This route is not easy. The big risks are rushing because traffic is behind you, weak observations when moving off, poor lane discipline around town, and getting into position too early at awkward right turns.

1) Eccleshall Road hill starts
The examiner may ask you to pull up on the left and move away again on the hill by the cemetery. The main fault risk is moving off without proper mirrors and a blind-spot check.

2) Carder Avenue closed junction
Visibility is poor. Treat it like a stop-style junction even if there is no stop sign. Slow right down, creep, peep, and only emerge when you can actually see.

3) Trinity Rise onto First Avenue
This combines a hill start with a closed junction. Bad clutch control or a rushed emerge can quickly turn into a serious fault.

4) First Avenue parked cars
Do not chase 30mph just because the limit says 30. Parked cars, buses, narrow gaps and meeting traffic mean controlled progress matters more than speed.

5) Gaol Square onto Chell Road
This is the major lane-discipline test. If you arrive here without knowing the layout, it feels like a shock and learners often drift or cut lanes.

6) Chell Road and the bus-lane section
You need to use the left lane after the bus lane. Plan early so you do not panic, move late, or stay in the wrong lane.

7) Awkward right turn near Tesco
The waiting area is small. Do not move into the box too early or you can end up stuck at a bad angle facing oncoming traffic.

8) Queensway roundabout area
Read the signs early, choose the correct lane, and commit. Drifting between lanes here is one of the easiest ways to lose the route under pressure.

Step-by-step guide

Stafford Test Route Guide - Greyfriars, Eccleshall Road, Gaol Square and Doxey Road

This route starts near The Range / Stafford Test Centre area and uses busy town roads, hill starts, closed junctions, tight residential roads, roundabouts, traffic lights, one-way streets and the difficult Gaol Square / Queensway area.

1) Leaving the test centre area
Start from the test centre area near The Range. Follow the road onto Greyfriars Way. At the end of the road, turn left onto Greyfriars Way. At the roundabout, use the left lane and take the left exit onto Eccleshall Road. Eccleshall Road is 30mph, but do not treat that as a target. Drive to the conditions, especially if traffic is heavy or parked vehicles affect your view.

2) Eccleshall Road - hill start and pulling up practice
Continue along Eccleshall Road. The examiner may ask you to pull up on the left near the hill by the cemetery, so be ready for a possible hill start. They may also ask you to pull up again further down the road. They are checking mirrors, blind spot, patience, gap judgement, and hill control. Do not just signal and move.

3) Right turn onto Woodlands Road
Further down Eccleshall Road, turn right onto Woodlands Road. Plan early, check mirrors, signal in good time, position correctly and wait for a safe gap. Do not cut the corner. After turning into Woodlands Road, continue ahead, then shortly afterwards turn left onto Carder Avenue.

4) Carder Avenue - closed junction
At the end of Carder Avenue, the junction is very closed. Treat it like a stop-style junction. Slow right down, creep forward carefully, peep out gradually, keep checking both directions, and only emerge when you are sure it is safe. At the junction, turn right and follow the road ahead.

5) Trinity Rise and First Avenue
Continue ahead, then turn right onto Trinity Rise. This is another tight junction, so take your time and keep the car under control. At the end of Trinity Rise, you meet another closed junction on a hill. Turn right onto First Avenue. Make sure you can see properly both ways before committing.

6) First Avenue - parked cars and meeting traffic
Follow First Avenue to the end of the road. This road can be tight, with parked cars, meeting traffic, buses and larger vehicles. You do not need to drive at 30mph. Drive at a speed that gives you time to deal with narrow gaps, pedestrians and oncoming vehicles. Safe, controlled progress is what matters.

7) Crossroads and traffic lights
At the end of the road, turn left. Continue to the traffic lights. At the traffic-light crossroads, turn right. Look well ahead for oncoming traffic and make your decision calmly. Once the lights have controlled the junction, your main concern is whether it is safe to complete the right turn.

8) A34 Stone Road back towards Greyfriars Way
Follow the road onto the A34 Stone Road and continue towards Greyfriars Way. At the roundabout, follow the road ahead, then head into town towards Gaol Square. This is busier, so keep your lane discipline sharp and avoid drifting.

9) Gaol Square roundabout - right onto Chell Road
At Gaol Square roundabout, take the third exit right onto Chell Road. Practise this before your test. Get your lane right early, signal correctly, keep checking mirrors, watch the traffic around you, and do not cut across lanes. Once on Chell Road, continue through the 20mph zone.

10) Chell Road and town centre section
Continue ahead and take the second exit, following the road ahead. There is a section where you need to use the left lane after the bus lane. This catches learners out because they move too late, stay in the wrong lane, or get nervous around buses and town traffic. Look well ahead and plan early.

11) Victoria Road, station area and roundabouts
Follow the road around past the train station and continue onto Victoria Road. You will then follow the road around through multiple roundabouts. Do not treat every roundabout the same. Read the signs, lane markings and traffic flow each time.

12) Left at the traffic lights and awkward right turn near Tesco
At the end of the road, turn left at the traffic lights. Shortly after Tesco, there is a difficult right turn with a small waiting area / box. Do not move into the box too early. Wait until there is enough space and a genuine opportunity to turn safely.

13) Right turn onto Friars Terrace
Turn right at the awkward junction and follow the road around onto Friars Terrace. This becomes a one-way road. Follow it carefully to the end, then turn left onto Wolverhampton Road. Watch your positioning and follow the one-way system correctly.

14) Wolverhampton Road and Queensway
Follow Wolverhampton Road back towards town, then come through the difficult Queensway roundabout area. Follow signs for A34 Queensway. Focus on correct lane choice, early signs, speed control, mirrors before changing position, and not drifting between lanes.

15) Chell Road to Doxey Road
Back on Chell Road, continue towards the next key roundabout. This time, take the third exit right onto Doxey Road. Use the correct lane and signal properly. After joining Doxey Road, follow the road ahead onto Pans Road. At the next roundabout, take the second exit, then turn left onto Greyfriars Place and follow the road back towards the test centre.

What to practise before this route
Hill starts, moving off safely with blind-spot checks, closed junctions, creeping and peeping, right turns across traffic, Gaol Square lane discipline, Queensway roundabout, one-way streets, meeting traffic on narrow roads, and pulling up on the left safely.

Final advice
This route is not about driving fast. It is about planning early, staying calm, and making safe decisions in awkward places. If the view is closed, creep. If the road is tight, slow down. If the junction is awkward, wait. If you are unsure about the lane, read the signs early and commit once you know where you are going.

Key challenges

Yellow Box Junction at Greyfriars Place
Learners often get confused turning left while positioned in the right-hand lane for an immediate right onto the A34. Don’t enter the box unless your exit is clear.

Gaol Roundabout (Chell Road)
Busy and multi-lane. Learners commonly end up in the wrong lane or miss the 20mph/bus lane signs.

Mini Roundabout by the Train Station
Drivers often U-turn here after drop-offs. Learners pull out too early without checking for cars doing a full loop.

Right Turn onto Friars Road
Easy to drift into the right-turn lane too early, leading into oncoming traffic. Wait for the first white line.

Austin Friars ? Rowley Bank
A closed, limited-visibility right turn. Needs creep-and-peep without blocking cars from the right.

Rowley Grove (Parked Cars)
Often full of parked cars. Learners drive too fast (should be roughly 10–20mph) and struggle with oncoming traffic.

Queensway Island (A34)
Use the middle lane then quickly transition to the left after the car park. Missing this leads to route confusion.

Doxey Road ? Car Park (Bay Parking)
Expect a forward or reverse bay park. Pressure makes learners miss blind spots — practise both beforehand.

Step-by-step guide

1) Greyfriars Way ? Greyfriars Place
Turn right onto Greyfriars Place. At the yellow box crossroads, turn left from the right lane, then immediately right onto the A34 towards Gaol roundabout.

2) Gaol Roundabout ? Chell Road (3rd exit)
Use the right lane on approach. Follow signs for Station/Telford.

3) Chell Road – 20mph + Bus Lane
Watch for the 20mph limit and stay out of the bus lane. Once past it, safely move into the left lane.

4) Tenterbanks Roundabout ? Mini Roundabout
Take the second exit onto Tenterbanks. Continue ahead at the following mini roundabout towards the station.

5) Mini Roundabout by Train Station
Take the first exit left past the station. Stick to the left lane. Watch for cars doing U-turns after drop-offs.

6) A518 Traffic Lights
Follow the left lane and turn left when lights go green. After Tesco, turn right onto Friars Road.

7) Right onto Friars Road
Do NOT move into the right-turn lane early. Only enter once you reach the first white line.

8) Left onto Austin Friars ? One-Way ? Rowley Bank
Turn left into Austin Friars. At the end, turn right onto Rowley Bank. Very limited visibility — use creep-and-peep without blocking cars on your right.

9) Rowley Bank ? Rowley Grove
Popular place to pull up on the left. Turn left onto Kingsley Road for manoeuvres.

10) Kingsley Road ? Rava Road ? Rowley Grove
Use Kingsley Road for manoeuvres. Continue onto Rava Road then Rowley Grove.

11) Rowley Grove (Parked Cars)
Often full of parked cars. Drive between 10–20mph. At the end, visibility is poor — stay left, creep, and check before turning right onto Rowley Bank.

12) Rowley Bank ? Queensway Island
Follow Rowley Bank to Queensway Island. Use the middle lane and follow signs for A34.

13) A34 ? Asda Roundabout
As you pass the car park on your left, stay in the left lane close to the kerb. At Asda roundabout, stick to the left lane for Queensway A34.

14) Queensway A34 ? Kingsmead
Speed limit increases to 40mph then drops back to 30mph before Kingsmead Retail Park. Stay alert.

15) Queensway Roundabout (Lanes Split Into Three)
Move into the left lane. Follow signs for Station / Telford / Chell Road.

16) Chell Road ? Doxey Road (3rd exit)
Follow the 20mph zone to the roundabout. Take the third exit onto Doxey Road.

17) Doxey Road ? Car Park (3rd exit)
Take the third exit right into the car park. Practice both forward and reverse bay parking — one will be tested.

18) Return to The Range via Pans Road
Exit the car park, take the third exit onto Pans Road, then follow the 30mph road to the yellow box lights. Turn left onto Greyfriars Place.

19) Finish
At the end of Greyfriars Place, turn left onto Greyfriars Way and return to the test centre.

Key challenges

1) Hill Start Leaving Greyfriars Place
Busy dual carriageway ahead. Use the handbrake and wait for the traffic lights on your right to turn red — this creates your safe gap.

2) McDonald’s Roundabout Lane Trap
Right lane goes ahead. Left lane only turns left. Learners often end up in the wrong lane — if so, just follow it safely (no fault).

Stop–start traffic. Examiners often ask for pull-overs and a hill start. Maintain good clutch control.

4) 30 ? 40 ? 50mph Speed Changes
Several speed changes on this route. Missing one is a common serious fault.

5) Right Turn Back onto Greyfriars A34
Either lane works, but you must stay in your chosen lane as you exit the roundabout.

6) Gaol Square Roundabout
Use the left lane and hug the kerb. Learners drift too wide.

7) Spiral Lanes Returning Towards Stone Road
Move into the right lane early, then transition into the middle lane safely. Drifting lanes = big fail zone.

Dual carriageway opens up. Default to the left lane unless asked otherwise.

9) Large roundabout — first exit left
Immediately followed by a smaller roundabout…

10) Smaller roundabout — first exit left again
Now 50mph. Build speed if safe to show confidence.

11) Approaching next roundabout ? 30mph
Take the first exit left onto Eccleshall Road.

6) About 30 seconds later, turn right onto Cooperative Street
Just after Tesco Express.

7) Cooperative Street — one-way
Learners often miss the signs. Stay aware.

8) End of Cooperative Street ? right onto Marston Road
Because it’s one-way, position on the right. Being left here blocks left-turning traffic = potential serious fault.

9) Follow Marston Road
Narrow, parked cars, meeting situations. Look early for passing places.

10) End of Marston Road (no entry signs) ? follow left onto Albert Terrace

11) Continue to the crossroads ? straight ahead when lights are green

27) After the lights, move into the right lane when safe
You need it for the route ahead.

28) Continue through the second set of lights — still 50mph

29) After several lights, look for 30mph signs
Slow to the new limit.

30) Roundabout — first exit left onto A34 Stone Road

31) Speed limit becomes 40mph
Stay left and match traffic flow if safe.

32) After second lights, it drops to 30mph
Two lanes merge to one — mirror checks essential.

33) Continue to the crossroads
Shops, parked cars — give a door’s width or slow right down.

34) At the roundabout ? right lane to go straight ahead
Immediately after exiting, examiner will ask for the next right turn.

35) Next right into Greyfriars Way

11) Continue to McDonald’s roundabout
Examiner will ask you to turn right onto Greyfriars A34.
Either lane is allowed.

12) McDonald’s Roundabout (Right Turn Tip)
Whichever lane you start in, stay in that lane as you exit.
Lane discipline here is a major fail zone.

13) Follow A34 ahead to the traffic lights
Simple stretch — hold your lane.

14) Gaol Square Roundabout — 2nd exit A34
Use the left lane. Hug the kerb as you pass the first exit.

15) Continue along A34
If lights flash amber, proceed carefully if safe.

16) A34 Queensway ? traffic light crossroads
Often red. Continue ahead when safe.

17) Speed limit change ? 40mph
Approaching another roundabout — prepare to move right when safe.

18) Roundabout approach
Right lane becomes the middle lane.
This lets you take the second exit ahead.

19) Hug the kerb on the left curve
Do not drift into the middle lane — big learner fail area.

20) Next roundabout — first exit left onto Weston Road (A518)

21) Follow Weston Road to the yellow box + lights
Do NOT stop in the yellow box. Continue ahead when lights allow.

22) Weston Road
Parked cars and shops — may require 15–20mph. Watch for pedestrians.

23) At the crossroads ? left onto Westhead Avenue

24) Westhead Avenue — 20mph
Speed bumps naturally slow you down.

25) Parked cars along Westhead Avenue
Give a door’s width where possible. Slow down if tight.

26) End of Westhead Avenue ? left onto Tithe Barn Road
Again, many parked cars — take your time.

27) End of Tithe Barn Road ? right onto Corporation Street

28) Corporation Street — priority arrows
Big arrow = you have priority.
Small arrow = give way to oncoming cars.

29) End of Corporation Street ? left onto Sandon Road

30) Sandon Road Mini Roundabout
Very tricky. You’re taking the third exit, so signal right early.

31) Give way to the right
Cars often pull out unexpectedly here.

32) Take the 3rd exit onto Browning Street

33) Follow Browning Street ? right at traffic lights onto Greyfriars A34

34) Examiner will likely ask for the second left onto Greyfriars Way

35) Follow Greyfriars Way back to the test centre

36) Congratulations! ??
If you followed the route safely, you’ve smashed it.

Guide
Key challenges

1) Mini-Roundabout at Browning Street
Closed junction with limited visibility. Slow right down and check to the right carefully.

2) Unmarked Crossroads on Jasmine Road
Must check both ways. Missing a check here = serious fault.

3) Sharp Bends (The Cumbers + Seighford Road)
Speed must be reduced early — common loss-of-control area.

4) Manoeuvres on Conway Road
Be ready for parallel parking or pull-up-on-the-right + reverse.

5) Returning to the Test Centre
Many learners mentally switch off too early. Stay focused until parked.

6) Hill Start on Eccleshall Road (Graveyard Area)
Common examiner request. Use clutch control to avoid rolling back.

7) Bridgford Road Speed Changes
30 ? 50 ? 30mph. Easy place to pick up a speeding fault.

This leads to a mini-roundabout.

6) Mini-roundabout — take the 2nd exit
Closed junction — limited view. Slow down and double-check to the right.

Then left again onto Rowley Street. Expect pedestrians and parked cars.

8) Continue ahead on Rowley Street (one-way)
Stay in the left lane and follow the road around.

Possible hill start near the graveyard — avoid rolling back.

11) M6 Roundabout (J14) — take the 2nd exit (left lane)
Continue on Eccleshall Road toward Bridgford.

12) Follow through Bridgford — speed limit changes
30 ? 50 ? 30mph. Watch the signs closely.

Sharp bend at the end — slow down early.

16) End of The Cumbers ? right onto Seighford Road
Sharp left bend soon after — reduce speed.

17) Continue along Seighford Road
Rural stretch — increase speed if safe, stay in your comfort zone.

18) End of Seighford Road ? left onto Aston Bank
Road surface changes — expect bumps.

19) Left onto Greensome Lane
Residential, parked cars, oncoming traffic — keep speed low.

• Parallel park
• Pull up on right + reverse 2 car lengths

21) End of Conway Road ? turn right
Junction may be tight — be patient and ensure it’s clear.

Hazard Callouts

Stafford – Route 1 | FREE hazards (5)
  1. Test centre exit & parked lorry (0:50)

Treat it as a real road; look both ways and give way around the lorry safely.

  2. Crab Lane closed right turn (4:29)

Creep–peep at the very closed junction; don’t commit until you can clearly see it’s safe.

  3. Jail Square spiral roundabout (9:41)

Lanes tighten; hug the kerb and follow A518/Telford markings so you don’t straddle two lanes.

  4. Bus lane & late lane-change trap (11:02)

Stay out of the bus-only lane; after the 20 sign, mirrors–signal–move left only when it’s safe.

  5. Big Island multi-lane roundabout (15:22)

Use the middle lane for A34, let it feed you to the kerb, then stay by the kerb all the way off.

Stafford – Route 2 | Town & One-Way Streets hazards (5)
  1. Test centre exit junction (0:01)

Treat it as a real junction; pause and look left–right before you pull out.

  2. Spiral roundabout bus lane trap (4:32)

Stay out of the bus-only lane; after the solid line ends, mirrors–signal–move left only if it’s clear.

  3. Train station mini-roundabout (6:25)

Watch for drivers doing a full 360; if you’re not sure of their path, just wait and let them go.

  4. Central box & wrong-side lane trap (7:55)

Do not cross the white line into the box; wait in your lane and never use the oncoming lane to squeeze through.

  5. One-way street closed right turn (9:49)

Use the right lane to turn right; creep–peep into the busy road and only go when you can clearly see a safe gap.

Stafford – Route 3 | Town Centre Lights & No-Entry hazards (5)
  1. Crossroads left turn (use right lane) (1:03)

At the end of the road, use the right of the three left-turn lanes and watch for oncoming cars who may pull out.

  2. Asda / Wolverhampton lane split (3:57)

When the left lane splits into three, follow the Wolverhampton arrow and mirror-check before moving into the central lane.

  3. Town right-turn filter at lights (5:51)

Get fully into the middle right-turn box; wait in the junction on green and clear it even if the lights change.

  4. One-way street right-turn positioning (6:32)

Spot the one-way signs and give-way triangles; position in the right lane to turn right or you’ll block left-turners and fail.

  5. Spiral roundabout third exit right (11:36)

For third exit, hug the inside at first, then move to the outer lane by the kerb after exit two and stay there all the way off.

Stafford – Route 4 | Ring Road & Hospital Loop hazards (5)
  1. Funny lane-use roundabout (second exit ahead) (1:15)

First exit is left-lane only; for ahead second exit you MUST use the right lane and judge cars approaching from your right carefully.

  2. Dual-lane right turn (both lanes turn right) (8:01)

On this town roundabout both lanes turn right; stay in your entry lane all the way round and only move left after you’ve exited.

  3. A34 spiral roundabout (bins focus point) (9:16)

Follow the left/outside lane for A34; after the second lights aim for the bins and hug the kerb so you don’t drift into the centre lane.

  4. Give-way slip with neighbouring red/green lights (12:37)

Your lane has a give-way, not lights; don’t stop in the yellow box, and only go if your path is clear even when the other lanes are at green.

  5. Station spiral roundabout (3rd/4th exit right) (14:39)

Start in the right lane, hug the right-hand line, then move to the outside lane before the lights and stay by the kerb all the way to your exit.

Stafford – Route 5 | One-Way & 20 mph Zone hazards (5)
  1. McDonald’s roundabout lane trap (0:44)

You MUST move to the right lane for ahead second exit; if you stay left, turn left instead or you’ll fail.

  2. Co-operative Street one-way right turn (3:36)

Spot the one-way signs and position on the right so left-turning traffic can still go.

  3. One-way system & fast-changing lights (5:09)

At the crossroads on the one-way, be ready to go as soon as lights change – only 1–2 cars usually get through.

  4. Pulling out onto Beacon Side (50 mph) (10:40)

Treat it like a fast A-road: wait for a big gap, don’t pull out assuming traffic is doing 30.

  5. 50-road lane change at twin lights (11:40)

Stay left for the first lights, then mirrors–signal–move right because the left lane becomes left-turn only.

Stafford – Route 6 | Back Streets & Give-Way Lines hazards (5)
  1. McDonald’s roundabout right-lane only (1:00)

From Screwfix, move early to the right lane; only that lane can follow the road ahead second exit.

  2. Town roundabout (both lanes turn right) (9:10)

If you use the right lane to turn right, stay in it on exit then move back left when safe so you’re not blocking overtakers.

  3. A34 spiral roundabout (bins focus) (11:09)

Use the left of the split lanes, hug the outside, and aim for the bins so you don’t drift into the right lane.

  4. Yellow box & crossing trap (15:57)

Approach slowly, never stop in the yellow box or on the crossing; leave a car-length gap before the lights.

  5. Final confusing mini-roundabout (23:03)

Treat it like any mini: give way to the right, signal right for “ahead”, and expect cars on your left to do daft things.

Stafford – Route 7 | Rural & Dual Carriageway hazards (6)
  1. Early town hill start & right lane (1:40)

Out of Screwfix, nail the hill start and move into the right lane, then loop the roundabout and get back to the left lane when it’s safe.

  2. Barber’s blind mini-roundabout (2:40)

At the horrible mini roundabout, creep in 1st gear and use the barber’s shop window reflection to check for cars from the right before you go.

  3. One-way streets & exit roundabout maze (4:15)

Slow 10 mph through the tight one-way streets, then use the left lane only for “ahead” at the exit roundabout and be patient finding a safe gap.

  4. Bridgeford red-alert unmarked crossroads (8:05)

After turning left for Bridgeford, treat the totally unmarked crossroads and end-of-road like give ways: slow right down and look carefully both ways.

  5. Rural NSL sharp bends & speed control (12:30)

On the narrow 60 roads, ignore the number and drive 20–30; slow right down for the signed sharp bends, especially the big left-hander he calls the most important bend.

  6. Seighford emergency stop & manoeuvre zone (11:20)

In Seighford, expect an emergency stop (check all around before moving off), then back in Stafford practise parallel/pull-right manoeuvres and never forget the blind spot.
