Key Challenges

Parked Cars and Lane Change on A34 – As you approach the parked cars near the start, you must move right briefly, then come back left. Sitting in the right lane all the way from the test centre will block overtaking traffic and looks like poor lane discipline.

Sunken Roundabout – Multi-Exit Chaos – 4th exit towards town with narrow lanes and fast locals. You need a clear gap, solid lane positioning and a calm exit back into the left lane.

Basford Roundabout – Worst in Newcastle – Downhill approach, messy markings and impatient drivers. Hug the roundabout in the correct lane, let the lane split pull you into the left of the two right-turn lanes, then exit hugging the kerb towards the A500 slip road.

A500 Slip-Road Merge – Learners either go too slow or “turn in” instead of gliding. You need 50mph-ish, mirrors–signal–blind-spot, and a smooth merge into a pre-chosen gap.

Stoke Crossroads & “Fake” Slip Road – Complex crossroads signed by arrows on blue bollards. After turning right, the road feels like a 50mph slip road but stays at 30mph until you finally pass the 50 sign. Many learners fail here for speeding.

Hidden 20mph Zone on the Way Back – Small right-turn / 2nd-exit roundabout leads straight into a 20 zone that is easy to miss. You must spot the signs and get your speed right down.

Give Way Signs Before Town Roundabouts – Two give-way signs appear just before the big Newcastle roundabouts. It’s easy to stare at the roundabouts and miss them. You must choose the left lane (unless told otherwise) and properly give way to the right.

Newcastle Multi-Lane Roundabouts – Three-lane approaches where the middle lane goes ahead and spirals to the outside. Many learners drift inwards or change lane on the roundabout. Commit to your lane and let it carry you to the correct exit.

Pool Dam Mini-Spiral Roundabout – Tiny 3-lane roundabout where you must go from the middle lane straight to the outside/left edge as you enter. Going towards the right side puts you into the wrong lane and into conflict with other traffic.

Aldi Zebra Crossing After Roundabout – Immediately after a right-turn roundabout, there’s a very busy zebra outside Aldi. If you come off the roundabout too fast, you won’t stop in time when someone steps out.

Step-by-step guide

Exit the test centre and turn left.

At the end of the road, turn left again towards the main traffic-light crossroads.

At the crossroads, stay in the left lane and do not enter the yellow box unless your exit is clear. When the green filter arrow appears, follow the road straight ahead onto the A34.

Continue on the A34 at 30mph, then increase to 40mph only after the 40 sign.

Watch for parked cars in the left lane. When you see them, check mirrors, signal right, blind-spot check, move into the right lane, then return to the left lane once clear.

At the Sunken Roundabout, stay in your lane and take the 4th exit towards town. Approach steadily, look for a safe gap and don’t rush.

After exiting, keep lane discipline through the traffic lights; the lanes are narrow so hold your position carefully.

As you approach the next set of lights, the examiner will tell you to head for Basford – check mirrors, signal right, blind-spot check and move into the right lane.

At Basford Roundabout, use the right lane, turning right (4th exit) towards the A500 south. Hug the roundabout, control your speed on the downhill section and follow the lane marked A500 S.

Where the lane splits, follow the left of the two right-turn lanes so you can peel off cleanly towards the A500 slip road while hugging the kerb.

Join the A500 slip road, staying in the left lane. Build speed up to around 50mph, check mirrors, signal right, blind-spot check and glide into a safe gap on the dual carriageway.

Continue on the A500; when instructed, move into the left lane for the Stoke crossroads exit.

Follow the slip road up to the big Stoke crossroads and keep right, ready to turn right at the lights. Use the arrows on the blue signs / bollards to choose the correct lane.

Turn right at the crossroads, staying right to loop back towards the A500. The road here still has a 30mph limit, even though it feels like a slip road.

Only increase to 50mph after you pass the 50mph sign, then follow the road round, taking the exit back towards Newcastle rather than re-joining the main A500.

Move into the left lane when safe and follow the road up the hill towards town, avoiding the cycle lane unless you need it. Expect hill starts at the lights.

At the small roundabout at the top, treat it as a right turn / 2nd exit – use the right lane and signal right, then immediately slow for the 20mph zone as you leave the roundabout.

Follow the 20mph residential zone, watching for pedestrians and parked vehicles, then return to 30mph when signed.

Shortly after, don’t miss the give way signs ahead – choose the left lane, give way to traffic from the right and continue onto the Newcastle ring road.

At the first large Newcastle roundabout, the examiner will usually say “follow the road ahead, 3rd exit” – use the middle lane at the approach, give way to the right and allow your lane to bring you out to the outside of the roundabout, then take the 3rd exit.

At the next roundabout, turn left, 1st exit – avoid signalling too early because of the side road just before it, then exit in the left lane.

Approach Pool Dam Roundabout (the small 3-lane one). If following the road ahead, use the middle lane on approach and, as you enter, aim straight to the outside / left edge of the roundabout, not towards the centre. Exit with the road ahead.

At the next roundabout, usually take the 3rd exit right, then immediately prepare for the zebra crossing by Aldi just after the exit – be ready to stop.

Continue up the wide 30mph road towards the test centre area; expect to be asked to pull over and move off one or more times using the chevroned centre section for extra space.

Near the end, follow the road to a give-way T-junction that looks a bit like a mini-roundabout – treat it as a normal T-junction, then turn right.

At the final roundabout, follow the road ahead, 2nd exit, keeping to the left where possible.

Take the next left back towards the test centre, watch for parked cars, then turn left into the test centre entrance and park as directed.

Key challenges

Right Turn onto The Avenue

Use the right lane early. Expect green arrow. No need to wait for traffic.

Meeting Traffic along The Avenue / Penkhull

Constant parked cars on both sides. Adjust speed, give way as needed.

Crossroads near Hospital

Prioritise emergency vehicles. Listen for sirens. Avoid stopping mid-junction.

Penkhull Descent (Princes Road & Harpfield Road)

Steep, narrow and bendy. Use 2nd gear and centre of lane.

Zebra Crossings in Busy Areas

One near Penkhull School. Another just after sunken roundabout. Visibility is often blocked by buses/vans.

Signpost Blindness at Sainsbury's Crossroads

Too many signs cause people to miss the give way. Stay alert.

Sunken Roundabout (Barracks Road)

Poor markings. Other drivers often cut in. Always plan your lane.

Return Through Residential Zones

Watch for pull-over instructions, parked cars, and width restrictions.

Step-by-step guide

Newcastle Test Route 2 - Step-by-Step Guide

Starting Point: Newcastle-under-Lyme Test Centre (Clayton Lane)

Exit the test centre and turn right onto Clayton Lane.

At the end, turn left onto the A34 (Liverpool Road).

This is the only 40mph zone on this route. Use the left lane and build up to 40mph if safe.

At the lights, move into the right lane when safe. You’ll be turning right onto The Avenue (not the hospital entrance).

The light usually has a green arrow ? which allows you to proceed without waiting for oncoming traffic.

Continue down The Avenue (30mph)

Expect parked cars on both sides. Prioritise space and pass with caution.

Maintain 15–20mph if tight. Watch for ambulances near the hospital.

At the crossroads (near the hospital), turn right onto Hilton Road.

Yield to oncoming traffic and be cautious of sirens.

Follow Hilton Road through Parksite ? becomes Honeywall.

Still 30mph. Road shifts slightly due to parked cars.

Continue until the roundabout.

At the roundabout, take the first exit left onto Ashlands Road (into Penkhull).

Zebra crossing ahead near a school. Adjust speed if near school time (9am / 3pm).

If pedestrians are inside the islanded refuge (bollards on both sides), you don’t have to stop. If not protected, prepare to stop.

Continue into Penkhull village

Narrow roads, more parked cars. Take your time and give way if unsure.

At the mini roundabout, turn left onto Princes Road.

Follow the windy hill downwards (20mph is ideal)

Use second gear to control speed. Don’t hug the parked cars on the left.

At the crossroads, turn right onto Harpfields Road.

At the end, turn left onto Harpfield Road.

This is the tight hill descent. Use second gear and stay centred. Be ready to give way to uphill traffic.

At the bottom, bear left onto Princes Road again.

Be cautious of the red car parked near the exit – try to get back into your lane before the zebra crossing.

Approach the giveaway at the crossroads near Sainsbury’s ? turn left onto A34 (London Road)

Look out for the give way sign after all the road signs (signpost blindness risk!).

Follow A34 northbound (Newcastle Road)

Still 30mph. Expect random parked cars. Use mirror checks to adjust.

Continue through Stoke's one-way system

Parked cars in bus lanes (double yellows). Be ready to manoeuvre.

Follow the road up to the lights at Stoke Bridge.

Use left lane. Lights with arrows may confuse people. Green arrow = go.

At the roundabout near Stoke Minster, take the first exit onto Church Street.

You’re now in Newcastle town centre. This area is a 20mph zone.

Follow through town until you see a 30mph sign.

Approach Ryecroft roundabout. Take the first exit left.

Be aware of bus stop just before the roundabout. If a bus is there, overtake safely.

Continue to the next roundabout. Take the third exit right onto Barracks Road (A527).

This is the Sunken Roundabout.

Be careful: some drivers use both lanes to turn right – they shouldn’t. Practice this roundabout from this side if possible.

After the roundabout, immediately look for a zebra crossing

Be extra cautious if a van or large vehicle is blocking view of pedestrians.

Follow up the hill on Barracks Road. 30mph.

At the roundabout (near Sutherland Road), take the second exit ahead.

Position on the outside (left) of the roundabout. Don’t cut lanes.

Turn left onto Sutherland Drive.

Quiet residential area. Common pull-over zone. Watch for parked cars.

At the end, turn right onto Dartmouth Avenue.

Another common place for pulling over.

At the roundabout, take the second exit ahead.

Right turn is quite close. Approach at 10–15mph and give way.

Continue back to Clayton Lane. Return to the test centre.

?? Key Challenges on Route 3

Aldi Crossroads
Busy and awkward since the rebuild.

5-Exit Roundabout
Easy to overshoot or get lost.

Yings Drive
Narrow, blind, and forces you to slow right down.

London Road Parked Cars
Space constantly tight ? slow down when needed.

“Signpost Blindness” Junction
Too many signs hide the give-way. Learners often fail here.

Stoke One-Way System
Hug the right lane. Don’t let the sat-nav confuse you.

A500 Slip Road + Merge
Get up to speed fast, pick your gap early.

Basford Roundabout
Middle lane ? outside lane. Lane discipline is everything.

Aldi Zebra Crossing
Hidden behind vans and buses.

Sharp Left Turn + Hill Starts
Easy to drift wide or roll back.

Step-by-step guide

? Newcastle Test Route 3 – Step-by-Step Guide
Starting Point: Newcastle-under-Lyme Test Centre (Clayton Lane)

Exit the test centre and turn left onto Clayton Lane.

At the new Aldi crossroads, turn right onto the A34 (Liverpool Road).

Stay in the left lane unless overtaking. Everything here is 30mph.

Expect lots of traffic lights. If they’ve been green a long time, prepare for them to change.

Pass the chevrons on the left – examiners love using this area for pull-overs.

Take the next left onto a narrow meeting-traffic road (lots of parked cars).

Follow this road to the large roundabout and take the 5th exit (right).

This leads onto Yings Drive – a very narrow road. Go slow.

At the end, turn left onto London Road (A34) heading toward Stoke.

London Road is long with very frequent parked cars – slow down whenever space is tight.

Watch for people stepping out between shops.

Approach the mini roundabout, give way to the right, and continue ahead.

Immediately after, pass a zebra crossing – kids appear suddenly here.

Keep going until you reach the busy 4-sign junction (lots of signpost clutter).

Do not miss the give way sign hidden behind the clutter.

Enter Stoke’s one-way system and get into the right lane.

Treat this whole area like one giant roundabout – hug the right side.

Beware of the contraflow bus lane coming toward you on the right.

Follow the right lane through all bends until the examiner tells you to move left.

After the traffic lights, check mirrors, signal, blind spot, and move left.

Follow the left lane around and take the left turn, staying in the right lane as it becomes the A500 slip road.

Join the A500 – get up to speed (close to 50mph).

Keep centred and look far ahead.

Take the next left slip road signposted Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Use the slip road to slow down, not the A500.

At the roundabout, take the 1st exit left (back into 30mph).

At the lights ahead, use the right lane and turn right.

Do not wait behind the white line on a green light – move into the junction.

Take the next left – this is a very sharp corner.

You may need 1st gear. Do not drift onto the other side of the road.

Turn right at the next T-junction – hill start.

Continue through the residential area with parked cars and bends.

At the end, turn left. Another area with parked cars and pull-over spots.

Follow straight until the roundabout and take the 2nd exit ahead.

Stay on the outside lane – do not straight-line it.

Continue to the next roundabout and take the 4th exit (right).

After the 2nd exit, move gently to the outside lane (if safe).

Complete the turn and head to the next roundabout.

Take the 1st exit left – do not signal too early.

Approach Basford Roundabout (3 lanes).

Use the middle lane to go ahead, then move to the outside of the roundabout as you circle.

Exit carefully – lane markings are poor here.

Immediately watch for the zebra crossing outside Aldi.

Road splits – move into the left lane early.

Carry on up the hill. Lots of chevrons where examiners may pull you over.

At the roundabout, take the 1st exit left.

Follow the road through housing areas back toward Clayton Lane.

Final left turn into the test centre.

Park up. Done. Nice work.

Key challenges

?? Key Challenges – Hanford / Spiral Route

Aldi Crossroads (start & end)
Narrow lanes, busy traffic. Need solid lane position and confident right turns.

5-Exit Roundabout + Narrow Estate Road
Easy to miscount exits and then get squeezed on the tiny road afterwards.

Parked-Car Gauntlets (multiple roads)
Constant meeting traffic. Remember:

Less space = less speed.

STOP Sign Turn Right
You must fully stop, even if it looks clear.

Speed Bumps Road
Big humps – anything much over 10mph feels and looks out of control.

A500 Slip Road Solid White Line
You must not cross that line. Adjust speed early and merge smoothly.

Hanford Spiral Roundabout
Middle lane allowed to turn right. Follow the arrows and hug the kerb all the way around.

Right-Turn Lane at Lights
Being in the wrong lane and turning right from the middle = easy test fail.

Church “Roundabout” and Mini-Roundabouts
Left-only around the church, then tight mini-roundabout with parked cars and a school crossing.

A34 Speed Changes & Cycle Boxes
30 ? 40 ? 30. Missing a sign or stopping in a cycle box can really hurt your result.

Step-by-step guide

? Newcastle Test Route – Hanford Roundabout & Spiral

Starting point: Newcastle-under-Lyme Test Centre (Clayton Lane)

Exit the test centre and turn left onto Clayton Lane.

Follow the road to the new Aldi crossroads and turn right onto the A34.

Lanes are narrow here – hug the right side of your lane and don’t drift.

As you turn right onto the A34, go straight into the left lane.

The whole stretch is 30mph. Use the left lane for normal driving.

If you need to overtake a bus or a bike, use the right lane, then move back left when safe.

Leave at least a car’s width when passing cyclists or parked cars.

The lanes merge into one – keep a safe door’s width from parked cars.

Take the next left into a residential road (good meeting-traffic practice).

This is a common place for pull up on the left and angled start.

Follow the road to a large roundabout with lots of exits.

Take the 5th exit right – treat it like any right turn on a roundabout: hug the inside, count each exit.

The next road is very narrow – 15–20mph is plenty.

At the end, turn left onto London Road (A34).

London Road is back to a wider 30mph section at first.

Further along you’ll see parked cars – slow down if space is tight.

Take the next right into a side street full of parked cars.

There is not enough room for two cars where cars are parked – give way to oncoming traffic.

At the end, stop at the give way and turn left at the crossroads.

This next street is another favourite for pull-overs and parallel park manoeuvres.

Keep your blind spot checks sharp when moving off – examiners really watch for this.

At the end, turn right onto a road with big speed bumps.

Over the humps, aim for about 10mph – any faster will feel rough.

At the end of this road, turn right at a STOP sign – you must physically stop.

Even if it looks totally clear, you must come to a complete stop before you go.

Continue along a wider 30mph road with parked cars on the left.

There’s usually space to keep a door’s width at 30mph – just watch for anything jutting out.

At the roundabout ahead, take the 1st exit left.

Shortly after, the examiner will ask you to move into the right lane.

Check mirrors, signal, blind spot and move into the right lane when safe.

Stay in the right lane for the next roundabout – you’re taking the 3rd exit right onto the A500.

Count exits: first, second, and then third exit right onto the slip road.

As you join the slip road, you’ll see 50mph signs – this is your cue to speed up.

Follow the slip road round – do not cross the solid white line at the merge.

Match the speed of traffic on the A500 and merge when there’s a gap (mirrors, signal, blind spot).

Once on the A500, keep about 50mph if safe and hold a steady position in your lane.

Continue to the next slip road and follow signs for Hanford roundabout.

?? Hanford Roundabout Section

At Hanford Roundabout, you’re taking the 3rd exit right towards Newcastle.

As the road widens, you’ll see arrows – both middle and right lanes can turn right.

Use the middle lane – it’s usually easier.

Follow the arrows and hug the outside (kerb side) of the roundabout all the way around.

Keep your speed low (it’s a 30mph area – 15–20mph on the roundabout is fine).

Exit still hugging the kerb – don’t drift across other lanes.

Back Towards Newcastle & Test Centre

After the roundabout, the examiner will ask you to use the right lane – you’ll be turning right soon.

Check mirrors, signal, blind spot, then move to the right lane.

At the second set of traffic lights, turn right.

Make sure you are in the dedicated right-turn lane – don’t turn right from the middle lane.

On a green arrow, just go.

On a green light (no arrow), move into the middle of the junction and wait for a safe gap.

After the turn, you’re on a narrow meeting-traffic road – 15–20mph is ideal.

Take the second left (near the red door).

Turn in slowly – there are almost always cars parked on the corners.

Follow this road with constant parked cars both sides.

Use the “door’s width rule”:

Door’s width each side = up to 20mph.

Less than that = slow right down (10–15mph).

Keep using gaps on your left to give way to oncoming cars.

Eventually, the parked cars swap to the opposite side – now your job is to hug the kerb.

You’ll reach a “left only” sign around a church in the middle – treat it like a mini-roundabout around the church and hug the wall.

At the mini-roundabout, take the 1st exit left.

More parked cars and a zebra crossing near a school – slow down and be ready to stop.

At the next bigger roundabout, take the 3rd exit right.

There’s a car park on the left beforehand – often used for bay parking practice on other routes.

On the short dual carriageway, stay in the right lane – the left keeps peeling off left.

At the traffic lights, both lanes can go ahead; pick whichever is clearer, then watch for the merge after.

At the next crossroads, take the first left into another meeting-traffic road.

This road is tight with parked cars – keep it around 20mph or less.

At the end, turn left onto the A34 dual carriageway.

Use the left lane unless you’ve been told to turn right.

This part of the A34 is 40mph – match the flow if safe and watch for cycle boxes at the lights.

Further up, it returns to 30mph – watch for the 30mph signs.

The examiner will usually ask you to move into the right lane for the final right turn.

At the crossroads near Aldi, turn right (same crossroads you used earlier).

Green arrow = go.

Green light = pull into the junction and wait for a gap.

Take the next right back into the test centre road.

Follow instructions to park up and finish the test.

Step-by-step guide

? Newcastle Test Route – “Clayton Lane ? Junction 15 ? A500 ? Stoke Loop”

This is the toughest route in Newcastle. Loads of meeting traffic, loads of awkward timings, loads of “if you know, you know” hazards.
If you can do this one, you can do any of them.

?? Step-by-Step Route Guide (Numbered List)
1. Leave the test centre

Turn left onto Clayton Lane.

2. Clayton Lane = Meeting-Traffic Mayhem

This whole road is full of parked cars.
You’ll spend the next few minutes doing 10–20 mph, giving way constantly.

3. Give way whenever cars are parked on your side

Look far ahead for gaps.
Use them before oncoming cars reach you.

4. Speed only if you have a full door’s width

A solid door’s width = 20–25 mph.
Less than a door’s width = slow right down.

5. Watch the zebra crossing by the school

If it’s around 9am or 3pm, kids appear out of nowhere.

6. Turn left at the end onto the A34

This short bit is 40 mph, clearly signposted.

7. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto Northwood Lane

Back to 30 mph.

8. Northwood Lane starts fine… then squeezes you

The top section is OK.
Then it gets thin, fast.

9. Watch the downhill speed

You’ll suddenly roll faster — stay on the brake.

10. The CURB THAT STICKS OUT

When the van is shown in your video — that nasty curb bulges outwards.
Hug the white line without crossing it, or you’ll hit the curb.

11. Follow Northwood Lane to the end

You’ll meet a 40 mph road.

12. Turn right onto Whitmore Road (40 mph)

Cars here are fast — give yourself a big gap.

13. Head up Whitmore Road toward the next traffic lights

This part is messy at busy times.

14. Turn right at the crossroads (very tricky)

You’re turning right onto Newcastle Road near M6 J15.

15. The biggest hazard: blocked traffic everywhere

At busy times the whole junction clogs up.

16. When lights turn green ? move into the middle

NOT behind the stop line.
NOT blocking oncoming cars.
Aim forward as if going straight, then wait in the middle.

17. You must judge when to go

Two options:

Option 1: If cars are far away ? go early and clear the junction.

Option 2: If they’re too close ? wait in the middle for a proper gap.

Either way: don't block anyone and don't panic.

18. Continue onto the large M6 J15 roundabout

This roundabout is horrible: big, fast, aggressive drivers.

19. Take the 3rd exit towards Stoke (A500)

Use the right lane, look right for safe gaps.

20. When you enter the roundabout, you may need to accelerate harder

Nothing crazy — just enough to join safely.

21. Exit using the safest free lane

Left lane is ideal
Middle is fine
Right is OK but you must move over when safe.

22. Join the A500

This is 50 mph.
Get your speed up to match traffic.

23. Follow until the slip road for Stoke / A50 area

Use the left lane and take the slip road.

24. Use mirrors ? signal ? blind spot

Move left smoothly.

25. Turn off toward Michelin roundabout

This becomes 30 mph again.

26. Examiner may ask you to move into the right lane

Because you’re turning right at the next roundabout.

27. Follow through this simple roundabout

Nothing too hard here.

28. Proceed down into Stoke (London Road stretch)

Back to loads of parked cars and meeting traffic.

29. Look ahead for gaps

Do NOT squeeze past oncoming cars.
Be patient.

30. Watch for pedestrians at the hidden zebra crossing

They pop out without looking.

31. Continue until turning right onto a side road

You’ll see the turn after the lights.

32. Next turn: right onto Keelings Drive

Extremely narrow.
15–20 mph at most.

33. Follow to the big multi-exit roundabout

Take the 4th exit right (towards the hospital).

34. Up towards the hospital ? left at the roundabout

This puts you onto the home stretch.

35. Downhill section with a wall on the left

People clip mirrors here all the time.
Go 20–25 mph max.

36. Follow the signs (all traffic goes left by law)

It’s a give way onto a 40 mph road.

37. Join the right lane

You will soon be asked to turn right at the lights.

38. Turn right at the traffic lights

This is right next to the test centre.

39. Turn right into the test centre road

Finish strong.

Key challenges

?? Key Challenges – Newcastle Rural Route
1. Clayton Lane – Endless Meeting Traffic

Parked cars everywhere

Constant give-way decisions

Learners must judge gaps early

Speed often 10–20 mph

2. School Zone Hazards

Two separate schools

Zebra crossings get extremely busy

High-risk times: 8–9am & 3pm

3. Joining the 40mph Road

Cars approach fast

Need to pull out confidently

Must get up to speed quickly

4. National Speed Limit Section (Critical!)

Learners often go 30–35 mph ? this causes SERIOUS faults

Must show confidence at 50–60 mph where safe

Not speeding up = automatic fail after multiple faults

5. Three Mile Lane – Dangerous Rural Bends

NSL, but realistically 10–30 mph

Step-by-step guide

??? Newcastle Rural Route – Step-by-Step Guide

(Route with Three Mile Lane, Whitmore, Keele & Clayton Lane)

1. Start – Leaving the Test Centre

Turn right out of the test centre.

This first junction is horrible, especially with nerves – so practice it beforehand.

Wait for a safe gap. A good gap normally appears when the lights on your left turn red.

Don’t rush. If you mess this junction up, you’ll feel it for the whole test.

2. Follow Straight to the First Roundabout

Follow the road ahead.

Keep a steady speed – this road is usually clear enough to do 30.

Watch for any parked cars and slow down if space gets tight.

At the roundabout, take the 1st exit left.

3. Enter the 40mph Road

This next road is 40 mph.

Stay out of the cycle lane unless you absolutely must go around something.

Follow it all the way to the traffic lights.

At the lights, get into the right lane and turn right.

4. Turning Right at the Lights

Mirror ? Signal ? Move into the right lane early.

If the lights are green, roll forward over the white line and wait in the centre for oncoming traffic to clear.

Important: Don’t slam the brakes if the pedestrian lights ahead are red. Those lights are for the other road, not you.

5. Continue Toward the School Area

Wide road with a painted centre section.

You can usually keep doing 30 mph safely.

There’s a school at the start of the road and another on your right.

If it’s between 8–9am or 3pm, expect the zebra crossing to be busy.

6. First Pull-Over (Hill Start Area)

You’ll likely be asked to pull over here for a hill start.

Avoid pulling next to the yellow bollard.

When moving off again: check your blind spot — examiners watch this like a hawk.

7. End of Road ? Turn Left

Slow early. Look out for the 40 sign and the give-way line.

The road you’re joining is 40 mph, and cars may be coming fast.

Pull out confidently and get your speed up.

8. National Speed Limit Begins (60 mph)

You’ll soon see the NSL (60mph) sign.

This is where many learners fail because they stay at 30–35 mph.

On this open road you should be doing 50–60 mph unless conditions are bad.

Going too slow builds up faults (one every ~30 seconds) ? becomes a serious.

9. Roundabout ? Follow Ahead (2nd Exit)

Stay in the left lane unless it’s blocked.

Still NSL… but watch for the 50 mph signs just after the roundabout.

10. Approaching the Crossroads ? Turn Right

Speed drops to 40 mph on approach.

Signal early – traffic moves fast here.

Turn right at the crossroads near The Manor Arms pub.

11. Entering Three Mile Lane (NSL but VERY Narrow)

Three Mile Lane starts immediately with a 60 mph sign…

…but you CANNOT drive anywhere near 60 here.

Tight bends ? blind corners ? tractors ? mud ? cows.

Safe speed:

Tight bends: 10–15 mph

Gentle bends: 20–30 mph

Straight sections: 40–50 mph if totally clear

12. Continue Along Three Mile Lane

Keep adjusting your speed for bends.

Don’t hug the left too much – some bends will throw you into the verge.

Watch for farm entrances and cattle crossing points.

The road eventually straightens, and this is where you should build back up to 50 mph if safe.

13. End of Road ? Turn Right

Speed limit returns to 30 mph.

Position right at the give-way.

When safe, turn right.

There’s a zebra crossing immediately after – check it carefully.

14. 30 ? 40 Zone & Meeting Traffic

Road becomes 40 mph, but lots of parked cars appear.

If the cars are on your side, you must give way.

Always look ahead for gaps to pull into.

A full door’s width = you can keep speed up.

Less than a door’s width = slow to 15–20 mph.

15. End of Road ? Turn Right

Turning onto a 40 mph road.

Cars coming from both sides could be fast (40–50).

Don’t pull out unless you can get moving properly.

16. Roundabout – Follow Ahead

This one has no left exit, so following ahead is actually 1st exit.

Position left and follow it round.

Big downhill next ? don’t let speed creep above 40.

17. Enter 30 Zone & Spiral Roundabout

You’ll see the 30 signs.

Now the spiral roundabout:

Need right? Use the right lane early.

Follow the painted spirals.

Your lane will naturally push you outward.

Do NOT cut across at the last minute.

18. Continue Through Residential Area

Road becomes 30 mph with bumps.

Watch for school on the right and busy crossings.

Take the next right – always tight with parked cars.

19. More Meeting Traffic & Final Pull-Over

Narrow roads with cars on both sides.

Very common place to be asked to pull over again.

If cars behind can pass ? wait.

If they can’t pass ? that’s your chance to move off.

20. Nearing the End

Still 30 mph, but probably doing 15–20 with all the parked cars.

Turn left close to the end of the route.

This last bit is always busy at school/rush hour — take your time.

21. Final Roundabout ? Follow Ahead

Difficult to see right side – go very slow into it.

Take the 2nd exit.

22. Return to Test Centre

Turn left into the test centre road.

Take the 2nd entrance into the car park.

If you haven't done a manoeuvre yet, expect a reverse bay park.

And that’s it — you’re done!
