Lesson 9.3 | Module 9: Test Ready
Independent Driving And Sat Nav
Follow instructions without letting the device or signs rush your decisions.

Written practice guide
This lesson is currently taught as a written guide. Read it before your next driving lesson, then use the practice task, instructor question, and self-check below to make the in-car lesson more useful.
What This Helps With
Independent driving is not a memory test. It checks whether you can keep driving safely while following directions.
The Simple Version
If you miss a turn, do not panic. Keep driving safely and the examiner or sat nav will sort the route out.
Common Mistakes
- Turning late because the sat nav spoke late.
- Staring at the screen instead of the road.
- Panicking after missing a sign or instruction.
What Examiners Care About
They care about safe decisions. Taking the wrong road safely is much better than forcing the correct road dangerously.
Practise On Your Next Lesson
Use sat nav for a short route and practise missing a turn safely on purpose.
Ask Your Instructor
"Did I follow the instruction safely, or did I let it rush me?"
Quick Self-Check
- Did I keep looking ahead?
- Did I signal and position early enough?
- Could I safely ignore a late instruction?
