Slip roads feel scary because traffic is faster. The answer is not to crawl; it is to match speed safely.
The Simple Version
Build speed on the slip road, check mirrors and blind spot, pick a gap, and join without making traffic brake for you.
Speed Matching Makes Gaps Easier
- Dual carriageways are different because traffic is already moving quickly.
- The bigger the difference between your speed and their speed, the harder it is to find a safe gap.
- Use the slip road to build speed so you are closer to the speed of the traffic you want to join.
- Most drivers do not mind easing off the gas to open a space if you are moving at a similar speed. They do not want to brake heavily because you joined too slowly.
- If one driver does not leave space, do not panic. Keep looking, keep matching speed where safe, and use the next gap.
Common Mistakes
- Joining too slowly.
- Stopping at the end of the slip road when it is not needed.
- Waiting for someone to invite you instead of matching speed and choosing a real gap.
- Forcing traffic on the dual carriageway to brake because your speed is too different.
What Examiners Care About
They want safe speed matching, good observation, and clean commitment. You should not force your way in, but you also should not creep onto a fast road so slowly that everyone else has to solve the problem for you.
