Parallel parking is a daunting experience for learners and even some experienced drivers. It can also be the maneuver that makes or breaks your driving test. With a bit of patience and lots of practice anyone can master parallel parking.

Find a suitable space: Look for a space that is at least as long as your car. Make sure there is enough room on both sides of the space to open your car doors.

4. Check your blind spots! Before reversing, check over your shoulder making sure no one is behind you. If there is someone trying to get past wait for them to do so before reversing. If they are waiting for you then continue but always give them the chance.

5. Begin slowly reversing the car, no more than 1 mph.

6. Continue reversing until your car is facing a 2 o clock angle on a clock face. The best way to do this is to pick an object that is at a 2 o clock angle and continue until you are facing them.

7. At 45 degrees, straighten your wheel and continue reversing into the space.

8. Continually check your left mirror to keep an eye on the curb. At 1 meter from the curb stop the car and fully turn the wheel away from the curb. This will straighten the car.

9. Check you are parked within half a meter of the curb. Far enough away from the vehicle in front of you so you can drive out of the space.

During the test your examiner will expect you to finish this within 2 car lengths of the car in front. Follow these steps and you will be on your way to perfecting your parallel parking. During the test there will be no car behind you. You will only be expected to park behind a car in front of you.
